UEFA Europa League
Round of 32, Second-leg
Mapei Stadium (Stadio Città del Tricolore), Reggio Emilia, Italy
Borussia Dortmund sealed their place in the last-16 of the UEFA Europa League after defeating Atalanta 4-3 on aggregate, following a 1-1 draw in the second-leg at the Mapei Stadium (Stadio Città del Tricolore).
The Germans led 3-2 from the first-leg, but Rafael Tolói’s eleven-minute opener on the night, levelled the scores on aggregate and looked to have given the Serie A outfit the advantage, having scored two away-goals in the first-leg in Dortmund. However, substitute Marcel Schmelzer’s strike, seven minutes from time, ensured that die Schwarzgelben equalised and progressed into the next round on aggregate.
The hosts got off to the perfect start, finding the opener on the night in the 11th minute when Tolói headed home at the back-post, following a corner, to level the aggregate scores.
In the 26th minute the Nerazzurri should have doubled their lead when Bryan Cristante latched onto Alejandro Gómez’s lofted-pass, but the youngster fired wide from close-range, with just Roman Bürki to beat.
In the 78th minute la Dea had a good opportunity to double the lead when Cristante found the unmarked Gómez, who had just Bürki to beat, but his effort was terrifically smothered away by the keeper.
Two minutes later the visitors looked to capitalise when substitute Marco Reus pulled the ball back into the path of André Schürrle, but his first-time effort was brilliantly palmed away by Etrit Berisha.
In the 83rd minute, however, Dortmund drew level on the night when Reus’ strike was spilled by Berisha into the path of substitute Schmelzer, who dispatched the follow-up to put the Bundesliga side ahead on aggregate.
The result meant that Borussia Dortmund progressed into the last-16 of the competition, while Atalanta bowed out.
