FA Community Shield 2017
Wembley Stadium, London, England
80′ Pedro Sent off
Arsenal win 4-1 on penalties.
Arsenal won a fifteenth FA Community Shield after defeating London-rivals Chelsea 4-1 on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
Sead Kolašinac cancelled out Victor Moses’ early second-half opener to take the game to penalties, minutes after Pedro was controversially sent off for a studs-up challenge on Mohamed Elneny. In the shootout, which was the first edition of the new ABBA system introduced competitively in England, Thibaut Courtois and new signing Álvaro Morata fired off-target as substitute Olivier Giroud fired home the decisive spot-kick to win the title for the Gunners, who were faultless from the spot.
Arsenal started well and had a good chance to take the lead in the seventh minute when Granit Xhaka found Danny Welbeck with a fine cross-field pass, but the striker’s header was tame and Courtois made a straightforward save.
In the 22nd minute the Gunners very nearly took the lead when Alexandre Lacazette curled an effort at-goal from just outside the area that struck the post, with Courtois well-beaten.
In the 34th minute the Blues went close when Willian found Pedro, who shifted the ball onto his left foot before firing an effort at-goal that Petr Čech palmed away.
Two minutes later Chelsea thought they should have had a penalty when Willian went to ground after an apparent challenge from Héctor Bellerín, but the referee booked the Brazilian for simulation, although the winger seemed to have caught himself following slight contact with the full-back’s knee.
Two minutes before the break the North-London side went close when Alex Iwobi fired an effort on the turn that produced a comfortable save from Courtois.
The Premier League Champions started the second-half in the ascendancy and found the opener within a minute of the restart. Arsenal failed to properly clear a Chelsea corner, allowing Gary Cahill to head the ball forward into the path of Moses, who chested the ball before firing home past Čech.
In the 58th minute the Gunners went close when a miscued cross from Elneny nearly caught Courtois out, but the Belgian palmed the ball behind at his near-post.
In the 75th minute Arsenal went close again when Xhaka fired an effort from-range that Courtois terrifically tipped behind.
Five minutes later the Blues were reduced to ten-men when Pedro harshly saw red for a late studs-up challenge on Elneny.
Arsenal capitalised immediately and levelled the scores from the resulting-freekick, which was met by Kolašinac, who headed home across Courtois at the back-post.
In the 91st minute Chelsea had a good chance when former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fàbregas’ delivery was met by substitute Morata, but his header flew just wide as the game eventually went to a penalty-shootout.
After two successful spot-kicks from substitute Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal, Courtois and Morata missed consecutively, allowing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to extend the Gunners’ lead before substitute Giroud sent Courtois the wrong way to seal a 15th Community Shield title.
The result meant that Arsenal won a fifteenth Community Shield and was their ninth consecutive victory at Wembley, while Chelsea were defeated against the Gunners for a third consecutive season at Wembley.
