Atlético Madrid won the Audi Cup after defeating Liverpool 5-4 on penalties, having drawn 1-1 a the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Keidi Bare put the Roji-blancos ahead against the run of play in the first-half before Roberto Firmino sent the game to penalties with a successfully converted spot-kick after substitute Divock Origi was adjudged to have been fouled in the area despite minimal contact from Atlético skipper Gabi. The Spanish side triumphed in the penalty-shootout thanks to substitute and former Chelsea full-back Filipe Luís, who scored the decisive penalty following Miguel Ángel Moyà’s save from Reds skipper Jordan Henderson.
The Merseyside club started well and had a good chance in the 14th minute when Adam Lallana sent a fine cross into the path of Ben Woodburn at the back-post, but the youngster fired wide on the volley.
In the 33rd minute the Spanish side took the lead against the run of play when Bare headed home the follow-up after keeper Danny Ward terrifically palmed Ángel Correa’s first-time strike onto the bar, following a fine volleyed-cross from Šime Vrsaljko.
In the 75th minute Liverpool went close to a leveller when substitute Origi cut-inside before firing an effort just wide into the side-netting.
Six minutes later the Reds were gifted a penalty after Origi was adjudged to have been fouled in the area despite throwing himself to the ground under minimal contact from Gabi. Substitute Firmino stepped-up to send Moyà the wrong way and level the scores.
Six minutes later the Roji-blancos went close to going in front again when a corner from substitute Nicolás Gaitán was met by Lucas Hernández with a header that Ward did well to palm over the bar. The Spaniards had a good chance from the resulting-corner, which eventually fell to substitute Stefan Savić, who volleyed the ball just over the bar as the game eventually went to penalties.
Skipper Henderson was the unfortunate player to be denied in the shootout as Moyà guessed right to palm his spot-kick away.
This allowed Luís the opportunity to win the competition for Atlético and he did, sending Ward the wrong way in process.
The result meant that Atlético Madrid won the Audi Cup while Liverpool finished second above third-placed Napoli and hosts Bayern Munich, who finished fourth.
