Allianz-Arena, Munich, Germany
Liverpool booked their place in the Audi Cup Final after thrashing disappointing hosts Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
First half goals from Sadio Mané and new summer signing Mohamed Salah gave the Merseyside club a commanding 2-0 lead at the break before substitute Daniel Sturridge added a late third before going off injured.
Liverpool started well and found the net after just seven minutes when Roberto Firmino won possession off Corentin Tolisso on the half-way-line before surging forward to find Mané, who fired home across Sven Ulreich.
Four minutes later the Merseyside club went close to doubling their lead when Alberto Moreno sent a terrific cross into the path of Salah, but his effort on his weak-foot was palmed behind by Ulreich at his near-post.
In the 24th minute the visitors went close again when Moreno curled a freekick over the wall but Ulreich palmed the effort away.
Ten minutes later Liverpool doubled their lead when a delightful flick from Mané set Moreno away down the left flank and after the Spaniard’s effort was palmed away by Ulreich, the loose ball fell to Salah, who headed home the follow-up.
In the 58th minute the Bavarians had their first sight of goal when on-loan midfielder James Rodríguez fired an effort just wide from-range.
In the 71st minute Liverpool thought they had a third when substitute Ryan Kent got the better of Rafinha and pulled the ball back to fellow substitute Marko Grujić, who fired home via the inside of the post and the back of Ulreich, but the strike was chalked-off as another substitute Adam Lallana was adjudged to have been in an offside position and impeded the keeper.
Ten minutes later the German side went close to reducing the deficit when a well-worked corner found Thomas Müller, who pulled the ball back to Mats Hummels, who fired the ball just wide of the far-post.
Two minutes later the visitors made it three when two substitutes combined. Sturridge was sent through on-goal by Ben Woodburn and he surged forward before finding the back of the net with a fine lobbed-finish past Ulreich, although the former Chelsea striker injured himself in the process and had to eventually be replaced.
The result meant that Liverpool progressed into the Audi Cup Final and will play Atlético Madrid, while Bayern Munich will play Napoli in the third-place play-off.
