Group A

June 18th

Kazan Arena, Kazan, Russia

2-2

34′ Quaresma

42′ Hernández

86′ Soares

90’+1′ Moreno

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Portugal are third in Group A on a point, behind Mexico and Russia, who lead the table on three points.

FT: Mexico deserved something from the game and were rewarded for their commitment. Their only chance in the second-half fell to Moreno and he made no mistake to head home a stoppage-time equaliser.

FT: Portugal created a number of good chances but couldn’t kill the game off and were poor defensively. First Quaresma tested Ochoa with a strike from-range before substitute André Silva was brilliantly denied by the Mexican keeper from a header. Soares then found what looked to have been the winner with a deflected strike before substitute Gelson Martins fired an effort just wide.

FT: So Moreno heads home late to salvage a point for Mexico and deny Portugal a debut Confederations Cup victory.

HT: So will it be Portugal or Mexico to get the next goal and will they hold on? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: Both sides will need to be more clinical as they have wasted a number of good chances. Portugal have got into some promising positions and looked a threat in the final third but their finishing has been poor by their usual standards. Mexico have done well to contain the Portuguese attack thus far but will need to be at their best if they to remain in the game. They will need to continue to provide better service for Hernández and Jiménez, who has been quiet in the game, if they are to test the Portuguese defence once again.

HT: Mexico haven’t created many chances but most of the chances they created were clear-cut. First Vela curled a freekick just before Hernández tested Patrício with a header from close-range. Hernández then headed home to level the scores after Vela’s cross, following an error from Guerreiro before Hernández fired an effort over the bar from a Jiménez pull-back.

HT: Both sides created a number of good chances but defensive errors have cost both sides. The European Champions thought they had taken the lead when Pepe headed home from a Gomes strike but it was disallowed after the use of the VAR system. Quaresma then went close when his strike from-range tested Ochoa before Salcedo nearly put Portugal ahead with his header almost finding the back of his own-net but Ochoa made a fine save. Quaresma then found the net from Ronaldo’s pass before the Besiktas winger fired an effort inches wide.

HT: So we’re level at the break with a goal apiece and nothing to separate the two sides.
