FIFA Confederations Cup 2017
Stadion Krestovskyi, St. Petersburg, Russia
Thanks for joining us.
FT: The result means that Russia move to the top of Group A on three points ahead of Portugal’s clash with Mexico, while New Zealand drop to the bottom of the table.
FT: New Zealand created a few chances towards the latter stages of the match and went close when a Thomas strike from-range was palmed behind by Akinfeev before Smith had a header cleared off the line from the resulting-corner.
FT: Russia created a number of good chances to seal the victory. First Poloz’s header was palmed away by Marinovic into the path of Yerokhin, whose follow-up was smothered behind by the keeper before the New Zealand keeper palmed away a Poloz strike. Samedov then curled a freekick just over the bar before Smolov tapped home to double their lead. Smolov then surged forward before firing an effort that Marinovic saved well before substitute Bukharov was denied by Marinovic late-on.
FT: So Russia get the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup underway with a victory.

HT: So will Russia hold onto their lead or will New Zealand come back into the game? Join us again for the second-half.
HT: Russia will need to be more clinical if they want to seal the victory. They have been wasteful on a few occasions and won’t want to spurn any more chances against New Zealand, who will be eager to capitalise.
HT: New Zealand didn’t create many chances but they got into some promising positions. Their best chance fell to Wood, who fired an effort over the bar from-range. The positives they can take is that it’s only one-nil. They have to create more in the final third if they are to make Russia rue their missed opportunities.
HT: Russia started well and created a number of good chances. First a strike from Golovin was parried behind by Marinovic before Vasin struck the post with a header following a corner. Poloz then had a strike cleared off the line before the striker thought he should have had a penalty when he was sent tumbling in the area after a challenge with Marinovic, but the referee was unmoved despite there being contact. Dzhikiya then tested the New Zealand keeper from-range before Glushakov bundled the hosts ahead. Smolov then curled an effort just wide.
HT: So Russia lead at the break.
