UEFA Europa League
Estadio de Balaídos, Vigo, Spain
Manchester United have the advantage in their UEFA Europa League Semi-final clash against Celta de Vigo after defeating the Spanish side 1-0 away at the Estadio de Balaídos in the First-leg.
Marcus Rashford’s second-half freekick ensured José Mourinho’s side took an away goal back to Old Trafford for the Second-leg.
The hosts started well and should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Nemanja Radoja’s teasing delivery was met by the unmarked Daniel Wass with a free-header, but he somehow headed the ball wide from close-range, when he had to score.
Nine minutes later the visitors went close when Rashford cut-inside to fire a fine curling-effort that Sergio Álvarez did very well to palm behind.
In the 29th minute Manchester United went close again when Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s deflected cross managed to find its way to Jesse Lingard, but he just couldn’t make contact with the ball on the slide.
Five minutes later United had a good chance to take the lead when Paul Pogba sent Mkhitaryan through on-goal, the winger had just Álvarez to beat but the keeper smothered the ball away with his outstretched-foot.
Four minutes later the visitors had another good chance when Rashford played Lingard through on-goal, the number 14 had just Álvarez to beat, but the keeper made another fine stop, this time diving to his left to palm the ball away.
Six minutes into the restart the hosts went close when Iago Aspas met a teasing delivery from Wass, but he headed the ball just wide of the far-post.
Seven minutes later Celta went close again when Pione Sisto cut-inside to fire a deflected effort that Sergio Romero was forced to tip over the bar.
In the 67th minute United took the lead through Rashford, who curled home a wonderful freekick past Álvarez.
Five minutes later the Spaniards went close when Aspas combined with Jonny, who pulled the ball back to the former, who fired wide on the volley.
Two minutes later the Red Devils went close to doubling their lead on the night when Mkhitaryan found Lingard, who fired an effort just wide on the volley.
The result meant that Manchester United will take a precious away-goal back to Old Trafford for the Second-leg while Celta de Vigo will hope to find an away-goal of their own without reply to take the tie into Extra-Time, which is easier said than done.
