Liga NOS

April 9th

Parque Desportivo Comendador Joaquim de Almeida Freitas, Guimarães, Portugal

0-1

42′ Mitroglou

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Benfica remain at the top of Liga NOS but now move onto 78 points, a point clear of second-placed Porto, while Moreirense remain in 16th on 21 points.

FT: Moreirense will be disappointed with the result especially given the fact that they had created a number of good chances in the second-half, which they didn’t take. First Dramé was sent through on-goal after a miscued header from Salvio but he was to be denied by Lindelöf after the winger chipped Ederson. Then Cauê fired over the bar on the volley following a corner, where he was unmarked. Dramé then teed up Neto, who spurned a great chance when he dragged the ball wide from close-range when he should have scored before Roberto miscued an effort late-on following a corner.

FT: Mitroglou’s first-half header was enough for the Champions, who were below their usual best and Moreirense nearly pegged them back. The visitors didn’t create many chances but did go close when Mitroglou latched onto a Jonas pass to fire an effort that Makaridze smothered away.

FT: So Benfica earn a hard-fought victory to go back to the top of Liga NOS.

HT: So will Benfica add to their tally and hold onto their lead or will Moreirense surprise the Champions and find a leveller? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: Moreirense will need to find a leveller if they are to overcome the predicament they are in. Boateng has looked dangerous alongside Dramé but Benfica have managed to cope with their threat. The hosts will need to be more clinical on the break if they are to get the better of Benfica and will need to make the most of their chances of the visitors may make them rue their missed opportunities.

HT: Benfica need to be more clinical in front of goal and will need to get Jonas more involved if they are to add to their tally. The overall service has been poor from wide areas and the passing has been sloppy in the final-third, allowing Moreirense to deal with the threat on several occasions. Benfica’s defence will also have to be alert to deal with the threat of the hosts on the counter-attack.

HT: The hosts have frustrated Benfica on a number of occasions and have got into some promising positions themselves. The closest they came was when Petrolina fired an ambitious effort wide from-range. The hosts will also be disappointed to have conceded close to half-time following a soft-freekick that was awarded by the referee, but overall their defence has done well to keep Jonas and Mitroglou relatively quiet, although the latter found the net.

HT: The visitors have dominated the possession and have got into some good positions but their final pass has let them down on several occasions. They have created a few chances, first Pizzi forced Makaridze into a good save before the Georgian keeper made another fine save from a freekick from Benfica’s number 21. Mitroglou then headed a Semedo cross wide before Salvio tested Makaridze from-range. Mitroglou then headed Benfica ahead after the striker met a fine delivery from Pizzi with a freekick.

HT: So Benfica lead at the break.
