Real Madrid progressed into the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals for the seventh consecutive season after defeating Napoli 3-1 on the night and 6-2 on aggregate at the Stadio San Paolo in Napoli.
The hosts had to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit and Dries Mertens first-half strike gave the Neapolitans hope. However a quick Sergio Ramos brace early in the second-half dented the Italians’ chances before substitute Álvaro Morata made it three late-on.
The hosts started well and went close in the seventh minute when Marek Hamšík fired an effort just wide from-range.
In the 13th minute the Neapolitans went close again when Lorenzo Insigne fired an effort that Keylor Navas was forced to tip behind.
A minute later the visitors went close when Kalidou Koulibaly lost possession to Luka Modrić, who found Gareth Bale, whose cross was met by Toni Kroos on the volley, but Pepe Reina made a routine-save.
Three minutes later the Spaniards well close again when Casemiro wonderfully found Bale, who controlled the ball well before firing an effort that Reina saved well, although the Welshman had Karim Benzema in support.
In the 24th minute the hosts reduced the deficit on aggregate when a first-time-pass from Hamšík found Mertens, who fired home past Navas into the far-corner.
Four minutes later the visitors very nearly levelled the scores on the night when Benzema found Cristiano Ronaldo, who rounded Reina before striking the ball against the post from a tight-angle.
In the 37th minute the hosts almost levelled the aggregate scores after an Allan pass ricocheted into the path of Mertens, whose first-time effort hit the post, with Navas well-beaten.
Three minutes later the Italian side went close when Hamšík was found on the left-flank but his effort from a tight-angle was saved well by Navas.
A minute into the restart the visitors went close to a leveller on the night when Marcelo found Benzema with a cross-field pass but the Frenchman fired the ball just wide into the side-netting.
In the 51st minute the visitors drew level on the night when Kroos’ delivery from a corner was met by Ramos, who headed home into the far-corner to extend their aggregate lead.
Six minutes later the Champions took the lead on the night when another Kroos corner was met by Ramos, who headed the ball home via a deflection off Mertens that wrong-footed Reina.
In the 64th minute the hosts went close to pulling a goal back when Faouzi Ghoulam found substitute Marko Rog but he fired an effort just over the bar under-pressure.
In the 82nd minute Real Madrid should have made it three on the night when Dani Carvajal seized onto a loose clearance from Koulibaly and juggled the ball over two players before firing the ball just over the bar from close-range.
In the first of two additional minutes, Madrid made it three when Ronaldo latched onto a through-ball from Marcelo before firing an effort that Reina palmed away into the path of Morata, who fired home the rebound.
The result meant that Real Madrid progressed into their seventh consecutive Champions League Quarter-final at the expense of Napoli, who bowed out despite a spirited display over the two legs.
