A minute later the visitors went close when Kalidou Koulibaly lost possession to Luka Modrić, who found Gareth Bale, whose cross was met by Toni Kroos on the volley, but Pepe Reina made a routine-save.

Three minutes later the Spaniards well close again when Casemiro wonderfully found Bale, who controlled the ball well before firing an effort that Reina saved well, although the Welshman had Karim Benzema in support.

In the 24th minute the hosts reduced the deficit on aggregate when a first-time-pass from Hamšík found Mertens, who fired home past Navas into the far-corner.
