Premier League

March 4th

Anfield, Liverpool, England

3-1

9′ Firmino

39′ Mané

56′ Welbeck

90’+1′ Wijnaldum

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Liverpool leapfrogged Arsenal and Manchester City to move into third on 52 points whilst Arsenal drop to fifth before the rest of the weekend’s matches.

FT: Arsenal created a number of good chances in the second-half but ultimately the decision to leave out Sánchez from the starting line-up has cost the Gunners. The Chilean created two great chances, finding Giroud, whose header forced Mignolet into fine save. Then Sánchez’s pass allowed Welbeck to pull a goal back. Arsenal will feel hard-done by Bobby Madley’s decision to leave Can on the pitch after his late challenge on Walcott when he was already on a booking but the Gunner never really looked like breaching the Liverpool defence again in truth.

FT: The Reds were slow to start in the second-half and were given a wake-up call after Arsenal pulled a goal back and went close on a few occasions. First Matip spurned a great chance when he miscued his header. Then Origi hit the post from a header following a freekick before Wijnaldum sealed the victory late-on.

FT: So Liverpool defeat Arsenal to leapfrog the Gunners and move into third.

45′ Liverpool get the second-half underway.

45′ During the interval Alexis Sánchez replaces Coquelin.

HT: So will Liverpool add to their tally or will Arsenal come back in this match? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: The next goal will be crucial and should Liverpool find it, they may put the game to bed. Should Arsenal score next, they may stand a chance of a coming back in the match but the visitors will need to improve drastically against a much untroubled Liverpool side.

HT: Liverpool are rather unfortunate to not be further ahead in this match, much to the credit of Čech, who has kept the scoreline low, although the Reds haven’t capitalised on their chances. As for Arsenal, they have Alexis Sánchez and Theo Walcott on the bench and will undoubtedly be summoned if the Arsenal performance fails to improve.

HT: Arsenal have created any clear-cut chances in the first-half despite getting into some promising positions. Their best chance fell to Coquelin following a corner, but his volley was tame and easy for Mignolet. Xhaka also fired the ball harmlessly over the bar.

HT: The Reds started well and created a number of good chances, the first of which ended in a goal as Mané found Firmino, who fired home. Then Čech excellently palmed Coutinho’s fierce effort over the bar before Mané drilled home Liverpool’s second. Coutinho then had a good chance to make it three just before the break when he wonderfully brought down the ball after a deflected effort from Lallana, but his effort was straight at Čech.

HT: So Liverpool are comfortably ahead at the break.
