Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal, Spain

86′ Džeko

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Roma will go into the second-leg with a four-goal margin, a margin with four away goals too and will just need to prevent the Spaniards from scoring four. Villarreal will somehow need to find five away goals at the Stadio Olimpico but even that may not be enough should Roma score in the Italian capital. The defeat was also Villarreal’s heaviest home defeat since 2007.

FT: Roma made the most of their second-half chances and were clinical with Džeko completing a fine hat-trick. The Bosnian first fired home across Asenjo before his strike got the better of the keeper, who couldn’t do much to prevent the former Manchester City striker’s third. Substitute Salah went close to making it five late-on but his effort drifted just wide although the flag was up.

FT: The hosts started the second-half brightly and went close on a few occasions with Bakambu firing an effort just over the bar before Gaspar’s header was palmed behind at the near-post by Alisson. Castillejo then tested the keeper twice before Alisson made light-work of a powerful strike from Trigueros. After Roma doubled their lead the hosts did go close when a Soriano freekick tested Alisson but the keeper was rarely threatened overall and that was evident when substitute Borré volleyed just wide following a freekick.

FT: So Roma have one foot in the Last-16 thanks to their four-goal-margin.

HT: So will Villarreal come back in this first-leg or will Roma add to their tally? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: The visitors will be happy with their first-half performance but know that they could have added to their tally. The Italian side should also be wary of the threat of Villarreal on the break and have to defend well if they are to keep a clean-sheet back to the Stadio Olimpico. Villarreal will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to take something to Rome. The Spaniards cannot afford to concede another as they will have to find two goals in the Italian capital, which will be a difficult task.

HT: The hosts have got into their usual rhythm thus far but have created a few chances. First Castillejo fired an effort just over the bar before Gaspar spurned a great chance when his header from a Soriano pass lacked conviction. The visitors will need to get Bakambu and Sansone better service, the former has got into some good positions but has mistimed his runs whilst the passes from midfield have been delayed, causing the striker to be caught offside on a few occasions. Castillejo has been lively for the Yellow Submarines although his error led to Roma’s opener. Dos Santos has been relatively quiet and will need to get onto the ball more often as he is the play-maker in the side.

HT: The visitors have started well and have created a few chances, including the goal which is a precious away goal. First Džeko dragged an effort just wide before the Bosnian’s header from an El Shaarawy cross produced a comfortable save from Asenjo. Then Emerson wonderfully put Roma ahead with a fine swerving effort from-range from his weaker foot. The Brazilian went close to his second on the stroke of half-time but he was denied by Asenjo at his near-post.

HT: So Roma are ahead at the break.
