Premier League

January 31st

Anfield, Liverpool, England

1-1

24′ Luiz

57′ Wijnadum

76′ Costa Penalty saved

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Liverpool remain in fourth but now move onto 46 points, whilst Chelsea remain at the top of the league but now move onto 56 points.

FT: The result is a positive one for Chelsea as results elsewhere went their way, however Liverpool could have done with more than a point as they failed to capitalise on Arsenal’s defeat and Tottenham’s draw.

FT: Chelsea created a number of good chances in the second-half. First Moses hit the outside of the post from a tight-angle when he had other options. Then a Willian cross just evaded Costa before the striker had his penalty saved. Substitute Pedro had two good chances, the first of which was denied by a terrific challenge by Henderson before the winger curled an effort inches wide of the far-post.

FT: Liverpool deserve credit for coming back into the game and getting a draw. The Reds created a number of chances and should have found the net earlier in the match when Firmino fired over from close-range before Wijnaldum’s goal. Firmino had a great chance towards the final minutes when he met a cross from substitute Mané, but it was straight at Courtois.

FT: So Costa’s penalty miss has denied Chelsea the chance to go eleven points clear.

HT: The next goal will be crucial in the match and should Liverpool get it, the complexion of the game will undoubtedly change. Should Chelsea get it, it could be curtains for Liverpool. So will Liverpool come back in this match or will Chelsea add to their tally and hold on? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: There was some controversy over the awarding of the freekick which led to the goal but that cannot be used as an excuse for Mignolet, who was unprepared for the set-piece. Liverpool need to create more clear-cut chances against a stern and well-drilled defence whilst Chelsea, who have been sloppy in possession prior to the goal, need to keep hold of the ball and create some chances of their own. Chelsea need to be more clinical on the counter-attack if they are to seal the victory.

HT: Chelsea haven’t created many clear-cut chances but since finding the lead through Luiz’s fantastic freekick, they have looked comfortable. Willian’s freekick almost made it two when the delivery just evaded Luiz and Matić, forcing Mignolet into a fine save. Willian then fired the ball over the bar from-range.

HT: The hosts have dominated the majority of the first-half but haven’t created enough chances with Wijnaldum’s strike that forced Courtois into a fine save, the closest they have come. They need to get Coutinho and Firmino more involved in the match, they have been on the fringes thus far, much to the credit of the Chelsea defence.

HT: So Chelsea lead at the break.
