Napoli extended their unbeaten run in Serie A to ten matches after defeating A.C. Milan 2-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro) in Milan.

Two goals in the first ten minutes from Lorenzo Insigne and José Callejón gave the Neapolitans an early lead before Juraj Kucka pulled a goal back for the hosts, but it wasn’t enough for the Rossoneri, who were denied by the woodwork early in the second-half as the visitors moved level on points with second-placed Roma.

The visitors thought they should have been given a penalty in the second minute when Dries Mertens went to ground under a challenge from Gabriel Paletta but the referee was unmoved.

Three minutes later the Neapolitans took the lead. A swift counter-attack saw Mertens terrifically pick-out Insigne, who fired an effort across Gianluigi Donnarumma into the top-corner, with the young keeper only able to help it on its way.

Five minutes later the visitors then added a second. Mertens found Callejón, who was surging forward and collected the pass before slotting home through the legs of Donnarumma.

Napoli should have made it three on the 28th minute when Allan played a wonderful pass into Mertens, who was adjudged to have been onside but the Belgian miscued his effort and Donnarumma made a comfortable save, although Mertens had to score.

Six minutes later the hosts almost made the Belgian rue the miss when a Giacomo Bonaventura cross was headed just wide by Gustavo Gómez following a corner.

Two minutes later the Rossoneri did pull a goal back. Kucka intercepted a loose pass from Jorginho before beating Lorenzo Tonelli to slot home past Pepe Reina.

The hosts had a good chance on the stroke of half-time from a freekick just outside the area but Suso curled the ball over the bar.

A minute into the restart the hosts nearly drew level when a teasing delivery from Ignazio Abate was met by Mario Pašalić but his header rattled the bar with Reina well-beaten.

A minute later they went close again when José Sosa forced Reina into a good save after a Milan corner was cleared into his path.

In the 51st minute the visitors went close to extending their lead when Insigne curled a Napoli freekick inches over the bar.

Seven minutes later Insigne went close again. The Napoli winger intercepted possession before audaciously attempting to lob Donnarumma, who was off his line, but his effort looped onto the roof of the net.

In the 69th minute the visitors had the chance to seal the victory when Mertens was played through on-goal by Marek Hamšík and had just Donnarumma to beat, but the keeper spread himself well to palm the effort away.

In the 88th minute the hosts went close to an equaliser when Paletta met a Milan corner with a powerful header but it drifted just wide of the far-post.

In the fourth minute of injury-time Milan went close to a late leveller from a surprise source. Donnarumma came up for a Suso freekick and met the delivery with a glancing-header but Reina was equal to the effort to deny his counterpart a fairy-tale finish.

The result meant that Milan remained in fifth on 37 points whilst Napoli remained in third but now move onto 44 points, behind Roma on head-to-head, ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures. Napoli also extended their unbeaten run in the league to ten matches.
