Serie A

January 21st

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro), Milan, Italy

1-2

5′ Insigne

8′ Callejón

36′ Kucka

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Milan remain in fifth on 37 points whilst Napoli remain in third but now move onto 44 points, behind Roma on head-to-head, ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures. Napoli also extended their unbeaten run in the league to ten matches.

FT: Napoli could have put this game to bed in the first-half but Donnarumma came to Milan’s rescue, making an easy save from Mertens, who should have scored. Insigne went close on a couple of occasions in the second-half with a freekick and an audacious lob, which rippled the roof of the net on separate occasions. Mertens also had another opportunity to wrap up the game when he was played through on-goal, but he was to be denied by Donnarumma. On another night, a more clinical side may have made Napoli rue their missed opportunities but on this occasion the Neapolitans collect all three points for the second time this season against Milan.

FT: Milan had a host of chances in the second-half with Pašalić heading against the bar before Sosa and Bacca tested Reina. Paletta also went close to levelling the scores with a looping header before keeper Donnarumma forced Reina into a good save from a Suso freekick.

FT: So Napoli’s first-half goals were enough to defeat Milan.

45′ Napoli get the second-half underway.

HT: So will Milan come back in this match or will Napoli add to their tally? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: Milan have quality players on the bench and may be summoned if their performance fails to improve in the second-half as the trail the Neapolitans.

HT: Mertens could have given the Neapolitans a three-goal margin and wrapped up this game in the first-half but he didn’t and Milan capitalised to reduce the deficit before the break. Donnarumma could have done better for both of Napoli’s goals. He could have gotten a stronger hand to Insigne’s effort and shouldn’t have been beaten by Callejón. Milan need to get Bacca more involved, he has looked quiet thus far and hasn’t received enough service. Napoli will need to get a third to extend their margin and put the tie to bed.

HT: The hosts have been relatively poor in truth and were gifted a goal following a poor pass from Jorginho, which Kucka seized upon before slotting home. Prior to the goal the hosts should have scored when Gómez headed wide from a Bonaventura cross following a corner. Suso had a good chance in the dying moments of the half from a freekick but he curled it just over the bar.

HT: The visitors were quick off the marks and possibly could have had a penalty after Mertens went to ground under a challenge from Paletta. However soon after they went ahead through an Insigne strike that Donnarumma couldn’t keep out following a counter-attack. Callejón then doubled their lead before Mertens, the architect of both goals, spurned a great opportunity after being played through on-goal by Allan: miscuing his effort and producing an easy save from Donnarumma.

HT: So Napoli lead Milan at the San Siro.
