Liga NOS

Derby de Lisboa

December 11th

Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica (Da Luz), Lisboa, Portugal

24′ Salvio

47′ Jiménez

69′ Dost

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Benfica extend their lead the top of Liga NOS by four points as they remain top on 32 points whilst Sporting drop to third on 27 points.

FT: The visitors will rue the number of missed opportunities in the first-half too. In addition, had Campbell been fit enough to start the match, the outcome could have been very different. On the other hand, Benfica may have won this match more comfortably had they been more clinical in front of goal.

FT: Benfica had to ride their luck for large portions in the second-half but they did have a number of chances to extend their lead since Salvio’s goal. First a loose headed back-pass from Coates almost fell to Guedes before Jiménez headed home Benfica’s second. R. Silva had two great chances to extend their lead, first the winger sliced a volley wide after good play from Cervi before he opted to pass instead of going himself when played one-on-one.

FT: Sporting had a number of chances to level the scores in the second-half since Salvio’s goal when Dost fired an effort against the post. After Jiménez’s goal doubled Benfica’s lead, Sporting had to get the next goal and they went close on a number of occasions with first Carvalho and then Dost denied terrifically by Ederson. Dost eventually managed to pull a goal back via a free-header but it was too little too late for the visitors, who couldn’t breach the Benfica defence in the latter moments.

FT: So Benfica have held on to extend their lead the top of the league by four points.

HT: So will Benfica add to their tally or will Sporting come back in this match? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: Both sides look a threat on the break but thus far Sporting’s Martins has been kept at bay by Almeida. N. Semedo is causing problems for the visitors with his pace as his Silva, who looks a difference player in contrast to his previous performances.Pizzi is dictating the game alongside Salvio, who has been targeted by a number of the Sporting players. Carvalho and Silva have done well for Sporting but haven’t given César and Dost enough support. Ruiz has been quiet despite his earlier header and will require César and Martins to get deliveries in the box for himself and Dost.

HT: The visitors have had a number of good chances themselves. First Martins forced Ederson into a good save at his near-post before Ruiz’s header was saved by the Brazilian keeper. They thought they should have had a penalty when Lindelöf’s clearing header deflected off the arm of Pizzi from close-range but the referee was unmoved and Benfica capitalised on the break to take the lead. They went close when Luisão’s clearance ricocheted just over the bar off Carvalho.

HT: The Águias had created a number of good chances with Silva forcing Patrício into a good save at his near-post before the former wonderfully picked out Salvio to put Benfica ahead. Salvio then went close when he was found by N. Semedo but his effort deflected off R. Semedo. In the last few minutes of the first 45 minutes the hosts should have made it two when a crossfield-pass ricochetted off Ruiz into the path of Jiménez, whose effort was smothered well by Patrício.

HT: So Benfica have the lead at the break over the neighbouring rivals.
