UEFA Champions League
BayArena, Leverkusen, Germany
Tottenham Hotspur were held to a goalless draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the BayArena in Leverkusen in their third Champions League Group E match.
In a tale of two halves, Vincent Janssen went closest for Spurs in the first 45 minutes when he headed an effort onto the bar whilst, Javier Hernández spurned a great chance for the German side minutes into the second-half.
Both sides started well but it was the visitors who had the first attempt on goal. In the 26th minute, Victor Wanyama found Kieran Trippier, whose fine delivery was met by Dele Alli, who somehow headed wide from close-range.
Twelve minutes later the visitors nearly took the lead when a Trippier cross was met by Janssen, whose header rattled the bar before falling to Érik Lamela, whose acrobatic volley on the rebound was tipped over instinctively by Bernd Leno.
Five minutes later the hosts went close when Benjamin Henrichs found Hernández, who dragged an effort just wide of the target.
Three minutes into the restart the hosts were incensed they had taken the lead when Lars Bender’s dangerous low cross fell to Hernández, whose effort on the slide was brilliantly palmed away by Hugo Lloris on the line, although the Mexican should have scored. The Mexican believed the ball had crossed the line but the goal-line-technology system showed that the ball had not crossed the line.
In the 56th minute the hosts went close when Charles Aránguiz’s freekick was palmed behind by Lloris. A minute later Levekusen went close when Stephan Kießling did well to beat his man and find Aránguiz, whose effort was cleared by Rose with the loose ball falling to Hernández, whose acrobatic volley was headed over his own bar by Rose.
Three minutes later Lloris was forced into action when Kießling found Admir Mehmedi, who fired an effort at goal but Lloris palmed the effort behind. The hosts appealed for penalty from the resulting-corner when the cross hit the outstretched arm of Rose but the referee waved away the protests.
Four minutes later Lloris was forced into action once more when Kevin Kampl teed up Kießling, who fired an effort that the Frenchman palmed away at his near-post. The hosts had a great opportunity to take the lead from the resulting-corner when Ömer Toprak, who had a free header, headed straight at Lloris.
Four minutes later Toprak had another great opportunity for the German side when Lloris punched a corner into the path of the Turkish international, who fired an the effort just wide of the target.
In the 83rd minute Leverkusen should have gone ahead when Kampl sent in a terrific delivery into the path of Kießling, who somehow fired wide from close-range.
The final chance of the match fell to the hosts in the second minute of injury-time when substitute Julian Brandt received the ball to fires a deflected effort at goal but Lloris saved the attempt with ease.
The result meant that Bayer Leverkusen remained in third on three points, ahead of CSKA Moscow on two points, who drew with Monaco, whilst Tottenham remained in second on four points, behind Monaco (who have five points).
