liverpoolleicester city

Premier League

September 10th

Anfield, Liverpool, England

13′ Firmino

31′ Mané

38′ Vardy

56′ Lallana

89′ Firmino

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that Liverpool climb up to fifth temporarily on seven points before the rest of the weekend’s games whilst Leicester temporarily drop to 15th on four points before the rest of the weekend’s games.

FT: Leicester were trailing and sent men forward looking to reduce the deficit, but in going forward, they were left exposed in the back and Liverpool countered well as demonstrated with Firmino’s second.

FT: Vardy’s goal before the break gave the visitors a lifeline however, that hope was dashed when Lallana fired home 11 minutes into the second-half. Henderson, Sturridge and Mané, who did score, also spurned a number of good opportunites to extend their lead, fortunately for Leicester. The visitors had created a number of good chances in the second-half with Vardy being denied by Mignolet and Drinkwater firing a volley that deflected inches wide. Huth also went close when he flashed a header just wide of the far-post.

FT: For Leicester, the fact that the scoreline was only four, flatters them because it should really have been six or seven had Liverpool been more clinical.

FT: So Liverpool have added to their tally and inflicted a second league defeat for Champions Leicester City.

87′ Leiva concedes a corner.

85′ Chance!! Mané finds Firmino, who cuts the ball back to Mané, whose eventual effort is palmed away by Schmeichel.

84′ Play resumes.

83′ Slight delay in the match as Mignolet receives treatment.

81′ Huth is penalised for a flailing arm and receives a yellow card.

78′ Chance!! Firmino pulls the ball back to Henderson who fires over the bar from close-range. How did he miss that?!

77′ Chance!! A Musa cross is met by Vardy whose header is easily saved by Mignolet.

76′ Mané is caught offside, although again he was onside.

75′ Double substitution for Liverpool sees Philippe Coutinho and Kevin Stewart replace Sturridge and Wijnaldum.

75′ Chance!! The corner eventually falls to Amartey who can’t react in time as the ball hits him and goes just wide.

74′ Close!! Mahrez’s delivery falls to Drinkwater on the volley and his deflected effort drifts inches wide of the far-post.

55′ Chance!! Firmino wonderfully plays Sturridge in with a no-look pass but he takes a heavy touch and Schmeichel smothers the eventual effort.

51′ Play resumes.

48′ Slight delay in the match as Mignolet receives treatment.

47′ Albrighton’s delivery is punched clear by Mignolet, who also wins a freekick.

47′ Musa wins a corner after his deflected effort drifts wide.

45′ Liverpool get the second-half underway.

HT: During the interval, Leicester City make their second change of the game with Ahmed Musa replacing Okazaki.

HT: So will Liverpool add to their tally or will Leicester come back into this game? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: Liverpool’s defence has looked rocky since conceding and they’ll need to redeem themselves. Leicester haven’t had many opportunities other than Vardy’s goal and Huth’s header and they’ll need to get Mahrez, who’s been rather quiet, more involved if they are to get something from this game.

HT: The Reds looked comfortable at 2-0, but a terrible error from Leiva, invited Leicester back into this game as Vardy pounced to reduce the deficit. Since Leicester’s goal, the visitors were in the ascendancy and nearly got the leveller when hen Mignolet was caught in no man’s land from a throw-in and Huth nearly punished him when he headed an effort that clipped the top of the bar.

HT: The Reds started slowly but after the first goal had gone in, they should have had another two or three in truth. Firmino did well to put Liverpool ahead with a fine solo effort and then Sturridge should have doubled the lead after a nice exchange between Lallana and Mané. Sturridge did, however, play his part in Mané’s goal before Liverpool’s defence created a nervy last few minutes towards the end of the half.

HT: So Liverpool are narrowly ahead at the break.

45’+2′ The referee blows his whistle to bring the first 45 minutes to an end.

45′ There will be two additional minutes.

43′ Henderson receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Drinkwater.

40′ So close!! A Hernández throw-in puts Minolet under-pressure and he’s caught in no man’s land and Huth heads an effort ahead of the keeper that clips the top of the crossbar.

38′ Goal!! Mignolet opts to play the ball out from the back and Leiva, under-pressure makes a calamitous error playing a poor pass across the face of goal to the waiting Vardy, who taps home. Okazaki actually arrived in the area before the goalkick was actually taken, but the goal stands.

36′ Chance!! Liverpool break and Sturridge finds Wijnaldum but curls an effort over the bar.

33′ First Leicester City change sees Simpson replaced by Luis Hernández.

32′ Slight delay in the match as Simpson is injured.

31′ Goal!! Sturridge is played through and has just Schmeichel to beat but he unselfishly flicks the ball into Mané whose effort bounces into the net despite Schmeichel getting a big hand to it.

27′ Amartey receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Wijnaldum.

26′ Fuchs is penalised for a foul.

25′ Chance!! Mané and Lallana exchange a lovely one-two and the former pulls the ball back to Sturridge whose effort is smothered by Schmeichel. He really should have scored there.

22′ Chance!! Wijnaldum curls an effort on goal from-range but Schmeichel makes a comfortable save.

19′ Chance!! The delivery is half-cleared before Fuchs’ header back in falls to Okazaki but he shoots wide as he loses his footing. It wouldn’t have counted anyway as he was offside.

19′ Henderson concedes a corner.

18′ Chance!! Sturridge and Wijnaldum combine with the Dutch midfielder finding the striker whose effort lacks conviction and Schmeichel makes the save.

13′ Goal!! Firmino receives the ball from Milner, he cuts-inside and fires across Schmeichel to put the Reds ahead.
