France vs Germany

UEFA Euro 2016

July 7th

Stade Vélodrome, Marseille, France

45’+2′ Griezmann (P)

72′ Griezmann

Thanks for joining us.

FT: The result means that France progress into their third European Championship Final, their first on home soil since 1984. They will play Portugal who beat Wales yesterday whilst Germany bow out at the Semi-final stage of the European Championships for the second consecutive time.

FT: Germany also lost Boateng after the hour-mark and his absence was felt as Griezmann took advantage of a poor punch from Neuer after an error from Kimmich to double the scores. France didn’t dominate the game, but they had some luck with their controversial penalty which acted as a sucker-punch for Die Mannschaft and prevented Germany from gaining any real momentum.

FT: The hosts had to survive on a number of occasions with Lloris producing heroics to deny a number of good efforts on goal from Can, Schweinsteiger and Kimmich. However, they broke well and went close with Payet, Griezmann and Pogba.

FT: So France progress into their third European Championship Final.

HT: Germany will need to find a goal in order to remain in the competition but France will know that should they hold on, they will progress into the Final. So will Germany find the equaliser or will France weather the storm to progress into their first Final since 2006? Join us again for the second-half.

HT: The main talking-point was the penalty decision, which should not have been. One may argue that Schweinsteiger’s hand is up, but he’s challenging Evra for a header and the ball hits the German midfielder from point-blank range, making it difficult for the former Bayern Munich midfielder. However the referee pointed to the spot and Griezmann slotted home.

HT: France had a few chances with Griezmann forcing Neuer into a good save, but Neuer has been rather comfortable – making easy saves from Payet and Pogba from freekicks. France had the ideal opportunity to take the lead when a Boateng error allowed Giroud to bare down on goal, but Höwedes made a good block.

HT: France have survived for the majority of the game, with Schweinsteiger, Can and Müller going close, but the Germans have lacked the quality in the final third and France have capitalised as a result, although it was against the run of play and never a penalty.

HT: So France are ahead controversially.

45′ There will be two additional minutes.

44′ Hector concedes a cheap corner.

42′ Evra receives a yellow card for a foul on Kroos.

41′ Chance!! Boateng misjudges a header and Giroud is clean through on goal but he delays his strike and Höwedes makes a fantastic last-ditch challenge to block Giroud’s effort.

41′ Chance!! Umtiti finds Evra who pulls the ball back to Griezmann who fires an effort into the side-netting from a tight-angle.
