UEFA Europa League

Round of 16, first-leg

March 10th

Anfield, Liverpool, England

2-0

Aggregate: (2-0)

21′ Sturridge (P)

73′ Firmino

Thanks for joining us.

FT: So Liverpool have the advantage and are now 90 minutes away from a place in the quarter-finals.

FT: The Reds were unlucky to have not found the net again, much to the credit of De Gea, who made the scoreline respectable.

FT: The result means that Liverpool take a 2-0 advantage to Old Trafford.

FT: Towards the end of the game, Fellaini elbowed Can and he can count himself very lucky not to receive a booking at the very least. He’s got that in his locker the Belgian: such a disgusting challenge from the former Everton player. Disgusting really. UEFA should really take retrospective action, he just hasn’t learnt his lesson – doing it on countless occasions in the Premier League.

90’+2′ The referee blows his whistle to bring the first-leg to an end. The visitors were poor in truth and the hosts deserved their lead.

90′ There will be two additional minutes.

86′ Carrick concedes a corner. Lovren heads a cross wide from the right following a corner.

85′ Henderson wins a foul from Fellaini just outside the area. Once again the referee keeps his cards in his pocket. It comes to nothing.

84′ Close!! Schweinsteiger sends in a good cross that Fellaini heads just wide.

83′ Second change for the hosts sees Firmino depart for Divock Origi.

82′ Fellaini cynically brings Coutinho down. The Belgian is fortunate to avoid a second yellow card, just like in the majority of his games this season.

78′ Double substitution for the visitors as Mata departs for Ander Herrera and Schneiderlin departs for Bastian Schweinsteiger.

77′ Allen wins a corner for the hosts. The corner comes to nothing.

73′ Goal!! Carrick makes a hash of a clearance from what was a straightforward Henderson cross, Lallana gets the loose ball and finds Firmino who slots home into the near post.

72′ The corner comes to nothing.

71′ The freekick comes to nothing before Lallana’s beautiful footwork eventually leads to Firmino winning a corner.

70′ Moreno wins a freekick just outside the area with Rojo penalised for a high foot.

68′ Chance!! Lallana gets to the byline, pulls the ball back to Henderson, who lets the ball run before placing an effort that goes harmlessly wide.

66′ Close!! Clyne receives the ball, creates half a yard before firing a swerving effort that De Gea palms away – he’s not taking any chances with that one.

64′ Fellaini wins a freekick after Henderson bring him down. The Reds’ skipper should be wary, he’s already on a yellow card.

63′ First change for the Reds sees Joe Allen come on for Sturridge.

59′ Fellaini receives a yellow card. He had a swipe at the ball from Clyne but didn’t make contact with the ball or the man. Harsh.

54′ The corner comes to nothing.

53′ Close!! Coutinho fires an effort on the half-volley that’s terrifically tipped over by De Gea.

50′ Close!! Schneiderlin cuts inside before firing an effort that’s straight down Mignolet’s throat.

48′ Coutinho receives a yellow card for simulation.

45′ The hosts being the second period.

45′ During the interval Michael Carrick comes on for Rashford.

HT: Join is us again for the second-half.

HT: So will Liverpool add to their tally or will United come back into this match? There is still a second-leg to be played but United would love a precious away goal.

HT: Man United have hardly threatened the hosts, Depay’s freekick and Rojo’s drive the closest they’ve come.

HT: So Liverpool have the upper-hand courtesy of Sturridge’s penalty. The visitors are fortunate to be just one-down as Coutinho, Lallana and Sturridge were denied well by De Gea.

45′ There’s no additional time and the referee blows his whistle to bring the first 45 minutes to an end.

44′ Rashford receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Moreno.

42′ Chance!! A Man United effort move ends as Rojo fires over. Moments later Lovren receives a yellow card because of an earlier tackle which the referee let go as a result of playing the advantage.

41′ What a save!! Firmino finds a wonderful cross that is met by Lallana on the volley but somehow De Gea makes a reaction save to prevent the Reds going further ahead.

38′ Henderson tries to find Firmino but his pass is overhit.

38′ It’s taken short but Fellaini clears the danger.

37′ Sturridge wins a corner for the hosts.

35′ Chance!! Depay’s effort from the freekick swerves wide of the target.

33′ Fellaini wins a freekick in a good position after Lovren catches him late. The Belgian appears to stamp on the Croatian late but the referee seemed to miss that.

30′ Close!! Smalling loses his footing and the ball falls kindly to Sturridge, who fires an effort that De Gea smothers.

29′ Fellaini is penalised for handball.

22′ What a save!! Sturridge’s shot is going off-target but falls kindly to Coutinho, who should score, but he doesn’t make the right contact and De Gea gets there to claw it away. Then a Henderson strike is saved by the Spaniard.

21′ Rojo concedes a corner: clearing a dangerous Sturridge delivery. The corner comes to nothing.

21′ Goal!! Sturridge stutters in the run up before firing an effort that De Gea makes contact with but he can’t keep it out.

18′ Penalty to Liverpool!! Depay brings Clyne down in the area. The Dutchman first tugged the former Southampton full-back down before clipping his man’s heels. He receives a yellow card. Was it inside or outside? Looked like the right decision.

15′ Not much happening in this match as of yet, as soon as one side look to get forward their final pass is poor and the opposition clear. Seems a pattern.

8′ Mata’s delivery is straightforward for Mignolet who claims with ease.

7′ Moreno fouls Varela on the right flank. Good position this.

6′ Firmino brings Mata down on the half-way line.

4′ Can handles the ball to stop the visitors from breaking, not worthy of a card according to the referee.

2′ Henderson receives a yellow card for a high challenge on Schneiderlin. The referee stamping out his authority already, quite harsh it must be said.

1′ Lallana thinks he should have a freekick as Fellaini barges him but the referee waves play on.

0′ The visitors get us underway. What an opportunity!! A Depay cross finds Rashford but the youngster wasn’t expecting to receive the ball, and the ball hits his knee and goes harmlessly wide.
