UEFA Champions League

Round of 16, second-leg

March 9th

Stadion Petrovskij, Saint Petersburg, Russia

1-2

Aggregate: (1-3)

69′ Hulk

85′ Gaitán

90’+5′ Talisca

Thanks for joining us.

FT: Benfica’s leveler on the night was fortunate but Talisca made sure to put them through to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2012.

FT: So Benfica go through. Zenit’s equaliser was rather fortunate despite having the majority of the ball, given that there was a foul in the build-up to the goal. Nevertheless Benfica always looked like they would stand firm and possibly deserved the win on the night and over the two legs.

90’+5′ That was the last kick of the game as the referee blows to end the tie.

90’+5′ Goal!! Gaitán finds Talisca, who cuts inside before meeting the ball on the half-volley past Lodygin to send Benfica through to the quarter-finals.

90’+4′ Hulk receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Sanches. He’ll miss their next European match, next season most likely.

90’+1′ Final change for the visitors as Jonas departs for Anderson Talisca.

90′ Danny sends in a dangerous delivery but it’s just overhit.

90′ There will be five additional minutes.

89′ Delay in the match as Ederson is down with apparent cramp.

88′ Close!! Hulk cuts inside to create a yard of space before firing just over.

86′ Crushing blow for the hosts. Benfica’s away goal means that the hosts need two goals.

85′ Goal!! Substitute Jiménez tries an audacious effort that Lodygin tips onto the bar, but the ball falls kindly to Gaitán who heads the loose ball home into the unguarded net.

84′ Semedo wins a freekick in his area.

82′ Close!! Eliseu cuts inside before firing an effort that easy for Lodygin. Sanches was better placed.

81′ Final change for the hosts sees Maurício depart for Yusupov.

80′ Close!! Dzyuba beats a couple of players before his shot is smothered by Ederson.

78′ Jonas is caught offside.

73′ Gaitán wins a freekick in a good position. It comes to nothing.

72′ Second change for Benfica sees Pizzi departs for Eduardo Salvio.

71′ So close!! Lindelöf meets a corner but Lodygin somehow claws it away.

69′ Goal!! Former Porto striker Hulk scores after Zhirkov finds the Brazilian. There was a huge foul in the build-up with Zhirkov colliding with Semedo after the Benfica player was caught late, however, the referee waved play on.

67′ First change for the visitors as Mitroglou departs for Raúl Jiménez.

66′ Sanches bursts forward evading challenge after challenge before Neto challenges him fairly according to the referee.

63′ The substitutes have really brought this game life.

62′ Close!! Jonas is played onside by Pizzi, but with just Lodygin to beat, the Brazilian’s effort is saved well by the keeper. What a chance!

61′ Close!! Shatov cuts inside to find Dzyuba, who fires over. Great chance!

59′ Close!! Substitute Smolnikov meets a delivery from the right following , but his contact is poor and straightforward for Ederson.

57′ Changes for the hosts sees Anyukov for Igor Smolnikov and Kokorin depart for Oleg Shatov.

55′ A Hulk cross is blocked by Pizzi for a corner. The corner is temporarily cleared for Maurício who fires off-target.

53′ Sanches is penalised for a foul. Hulk takes it but it’s into the wall.

52′ Close!! Dzyuba meets a Hulk cross to palm the ball into the arms of Ederson. Shades of the ‘hand of God’ goal although the forward lost his footing.

50′ Maurício fouls Jonas.

48′ Pizzi is penalised for a challenge on Zhirkov. He then receives a yellow card for dissent. Very harsh given the challenge was incredibly soft.

45′ The visitors get the second half underway. Jonas fouls Witsel.

HT: So will Zenit get back into the tie or will Benfica get another and put the game to bed? Join us again for the second half.

HT: Zenit look a threat on the break and will look to bring Hulk more into the game. Benfica’s deliveries from set-pieces have been dangerous and have worried the hosts, but as of yet no-one has taken the initiative – possibly due to caution with the stakes being so high in this match, no-one wants to put a foot wrong.

HT: Danny has done well to link-up Zenit’s play but Fejsa has equally done well for the Lisbon side and snuffed out the danger on a handful of occasions.

HT: So quite an even first half, both sides enjoying the lion’s share of the possession. Zenit have possibly had the better chances with Dzyuba going close before being denied by Ederson, although Sanches and Jonas have come close from range.

45’+2′ The referee blows his whistle to bring the first 45 minute to an end.

45’+1′ Kokorin fouls Gaitán.

45′ There will be two additional minutes.

44′ Semedo wins a freekick of Danny.

38′ Hulk wins a freekick on the left flank after a challenge from Semedo.

36′ Close!! Hulk’s effort is deflected just wide of the post. The corner is met by Lombaerts but it is easy for Ederson.

35′ Mitroglou receives a yellow card for a late challenge on Maurício. Good chance for the hosts.

34′ The delivery is poor, before Pizzi is found moments later – but he’s offside.

33′ Pizzi is caught late by Maurício. Good position.

31′ Close!! The corner comes to nothing and the visitors break before Semedo fires an effort that stings the plams of Lodygin.

30′ Samaris concedes a corner taking no chances from Anyukov’s cross.

25′ Mitroglou is penalised after he he barged the former Benfica midfielder Witsel unfairly according to the referee.

21′ Close!! Danny almost finds Dzyuba, but Ederson does well to get there at the same time and palm it clear.

19′ Close!! The visitors do well as Mitroglou almost breaks free, but then Sanches receives the ball from range to strike an effort just inches wide of the far post.

18′ Gaitán’s delivery is dangerous again but the chance comes to nothing as Sanches is penalised for handball.

17′ Gaitán wins a freekick after Kokorin’s sliding challenge.

14′ The corner comes to nothing as the hosts are offside from Hulk’s eventual delivery.

13′ Anyukov sends in a dangerous delivery but the visitors clear behind. Ederson had come out but his defender wasn’t to know.

12′ Chance!! Jonas does well to cut inside but his strike is easy for Lodygin.

11′ The corner is played in by Gaitán into Mitroglou who heads staright at Lodygin, but the referee had already blown his whistle for a foul.

11′ Pizzi delivers the ball into Mitroglou, but the hosts clear it behind for a corner.

10′ Gaitán wins a freekick after Danny brings him down cynically.

6′ Close!! Dzyuba receives a long ball forward before firing narrowly wide of the goal.
