Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League to six points thanks to a three-one victory against Manchester City at the Etihad.

A brace from Robert Huth and a goal from Riyad Mahrez gave last season’s relegation survivors a three nil lead before Sergio Agüero headed in a late consolation.

The visitors started the game in the ascendancy from the off and took the lead after a couple of minutes. A Mahrez freekick found the unmarked Robert Huth, whose shot ricocheted off Martín Demichelis to beat Joe Hart and put the Foxes in front.

They came close again when Jamie Vardy was played through on goal, but Hart came to City’s rescue to smother the forward’s strike. Soon after the Foxes had another good opportunity when Drinkwater was found by Mahrez, but once again, Hart came to City’s aid.

Since the early pressure, the home side were playing much better, but despite having the majority of the possession, they couldn’t create many clear-cut chances and Leicester dealt with the threat.

The home side thought they should have had a penalty when Pablo Zabaleta went down under a challenge on the edge of the box, but referee Anthony Taylor gave a freekick on the edge of the penalty area.

After the break the Foxes began the second period in similar fashion to how they began the first, and doubled their lead three minutes into the restart. After some fantastic work from N’Golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez received the ball. The Algerian cut inside, beating Demichelis with a step-over before curling an effort past Hart into the top-corner. It was nothing less than the Foxes deserved, who made the most of the chances.

Twelve minutes later, they managed to get their third. A fantastic delivery from Christian Fuchs found Huth, who met the cross with a looping header that nestled in the top-corner, beating Hart, who was rooted to the spot.

The Foxes faithful were in inspiring mood, chanting, “We want four,” and they very nearly did. Seven minutes later, Drinkwater found Vardy, who had just the keeper to beat, but his effort was straight at Hart, who smothered it.

There wasn’t to be a fourth goal for the Foxes, but there was a late consolation from the hosts. In the 87th minute, a good delivery from substitute Bersant Celina found Sergio Agüero, who headed the ball past Kasper Schmeichel and give City a glimmer of hope.

Soon after they came close to getting a second when a poor back-pass from Danny Simpson fell to Agüero, but Schmeichel made it difficult for the Argentine, who shot wide from a tight-angle. That missed opportunity ended any City chance of a comeback, as the referee eventually brought the game to an end.

The victory for the Foxes meant that they extended their lead at the top of the league to six points, on 53 points. City remain in second temporarily on 47 points, but can be overtaken by Arsenal and Tottenham, who are yet to play.
