Defending European Champions Real Madrid came from a goal behind to draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, in was was both sides’ third match in Group H.

Raphäel Varane’s own-goal put the visitors in front before Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the scores from the penalty-spot for Zinedine Zidane’s side, two minutes before the interval, after Serge Aurier clumsily bundled over Toni Kroos in the area.

The hosts dominated proceedings and very nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a cross from Achraf Hakimi was met by Ronaldo with a header that struck the post with the follow-up fired wide by Karim Benzema, who should have scored.

In the 18th minute the visitors had a good opportunity themselves when a Christian Eriksen corner was met by Harry Kane with a header that Keylor Navas did well to palm over the bar.

Ten minutes later Spurs went ahead against the run of play when Aurier’s teasing delivery towards Kane, ricocheted into the back of the net off Varane.

Two minutes before the interval the European Champions were given a great chance to level the scores from the penalty-spot after Aurier was punished for his clumsy and needless challenge on Kroos. Ronaldo stepped-up to fire the resulting-spot-kick home, sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way in the process.

Eight minutes into the second-half Real Madrid should have taken the lead when Casemiro’s teasing delivery found Benzema, who looked set to score, but his header was terrifically smothered away by Lloris from point-blank-range, although the Madrid forward should have scored.

In the 62nd minute the hosts went close to going in front when Ronaldo’s fierce effort on the half-volley was tipped over the bar by Lloris.

Two minutes later Ronaldo forced Lloris into action again, when he surged forward to fire an effort at-goal that the Frenchman palmed away

In the 70th minute Spurs should have taken the lead when Kane was sent through on-goal by Fernando Llorente, the England international had just Navas to beat, but the Costa-Rican brilliantly palmed the effort behind.

Two minutes later the Premier League side went close again when Eriksen was sent through on-goal, but his effort was palmed into the side-netting by Navas.

The result meant that Real Madrid remained at the top of Group H as they moved onto seven points, while Tottenham remained second, level on points with the European Champions.
